Himura Rui was born of a Japanese father and a Hong Kong mother. He also has a brother named Shin that’s a year younger than him. Their father is owner of a watch company and their mother is an accountant at a major firm in Hong Kong. Their mother has a very traditional way of thinking which often conflicted with how Rui was taught by their father. Growing up, their mother believed men should not be cooking in the kitchen and often had the family ate out at restaurants because she herself was rather spoiled as a child and never learned how to cook properly. Rui developed a deep dislike for restaurants because he wanted everyone in the family to eat home cooked meals and not meals cooked in bulk to serve to other consumers. Although Rui would sometimes protest and learn how to cook through cookbooks and other sources, his mother disapproved greatly and would scold him over it saying “boys should not have such a useless hobby”. Rui then started collecting trading cards as a hobby and resell some of the duplicates he had to show his mother it’s a useful hobby since it can bring decent profit.

Their parents divorced when Rui was sixteen after long going arguments between due to difference in how to raise Rui and Shin. It is then their father decided to send the two boys over to his sister so he could focus on his efforts to maximize profit as the global recession continued. The aunt, obsessed with myths and astronomy, insisted the boys to attend Hoshizora High since she wasn’t able to afford going to it when she was younger. Not the type to protest, Rui agreed to attend the school but requested that he and Shin would be allowed to live by themselves in a place nearby. She agreed on the condition that she would drop by once a week to check up on them to ensure they are all right.

Although Rui isn’t completely sold on mythology, he figured it couldn’t hurt and would most likely be quite an informative subject to learn more about at Hoshizora High.
